Med Center Health engaged SH to design a ground-up facility to accommodate their clinical staff training program, community outreach program and to provide a new home for Western Kentucky University’s College of Nursing and Department of Physical Therapy.
The Health Sciences Complex is a truly collaborative facility where healthcare professionals and students can meet and work together. Whether it’s a student learning fundamental bedside skill or a seasoned professional researching new practices of care on a patient simulator, this facility provides the spaces which encourage academic and clinical integration. The exterior seating area and Main Lobby provide ample pre-function and casual meeting space outside of the 200-seat multi-purpose room. The First Floor also includes a kitchenette and seating area where faculty and students can have impromptu face-to-face interactions. The second and third floors feature student study and interaction spaces each included with a bar-top wired for laptops and other devices.
Energy conscious design was a consideration when developing the exterior envelope; the wall assembly includes a combination of outboard rigid insulation and inboard spray-applied insulation which exceeds code required minimums and ultimately creates long-term energy savings. We also positioned the faculty offices on the north façade of the building which allows for ambient light in these spaces, thereby reducing heat gain.
